Race Report: Wayne Elliot Memorial Circuit

Bizarre day of racing in Plaistow, NH, this past Saturday, 27 June, for the Wayne Elliott Memorial Circuit Race.  Jack Hayden & I in the Masters 35+ and nice to see Mark Bissell in the Masters 45+.
Racing was part of Old Day celebration, so the course area was crowded, along with a running road race that went off just before, so it was a bit crazy.  The kids races had poor signage and the running race got in the way of kids getting to it (I must have run 2mi with my 6yr old just to get there!), but they eventualy got a good turnout, and the woman running it was very patient and understanding; the kids got to race.
The grown-up race course was 6 laps of a 5+mi circuit with slight hill but generally fast.  Jack & I stayed together near the front, but it was bizarre . . . on lap 1 of our race, attacks started early with good racing rhythm until the pace car missed a turn, sort of neutralizing us until it got back in front.  After that, no attack could get away.  Jack & I stayed near the front, but it was tight.  Later at one point, a WWII jeep with a 50cal mounted on the back just pulled out into the peleton almost taking a bunch of us out, and the driver never seemed to even notice us. . . . last lap got sketchy, felt like back in the 4's - a lot of yelling and bumping, but luckily no crashes.  Definitely not as smooth as my first Masters race, but made it through ruber side down.  Jack netted 13th, and I 15th in the field of 50.
The 45+ race I think was similar - they started 10min after us; Mark finished 21st out of a field of 60 and seemed happy with getting back in the peleton, especially since he avoided a nasty crash in the final stretch; early word was a rider was down with a broken scapula . . . not good.
Organizers were taking a lot of feedback, so hopefully can see impovements for next year.
